November 4 - 13, Appleton area's Christ the Rock Community Church will host Freud's Last Session.
A hit in New York and L.A., this play by Mark St. Germain has wowed Chicago and Milwaukee critics as well. Playing the title roles are Steve Koehler (Milwaukee Rep's Guys on Ice, Door County's Peninsula Players) and Alan Atwood (a one-man tour de force in his national touring shows).
Set in Freud’s London home on the day England entered World War II, Freud’s Last Session is an imaginary meeting between the “father of psychotherapy,” and C.S. Lewis, professor and Christian apologist.
Freud's Last Session is a hard-hitting game of verbal and intellectual chess, with both Lewis and Freud bandying wits, beliefs and desires. Assisted suicide, the after life, the power of myth, and the existence of God enter into the conversation. Even as they debate, Freud is tortured by the excruciating pain of his oral cancer which evokes a compassion in Lewis, deepening a bond already begun with the men's shared humor. Throughout the tough exchange is woven a lightness of nuance and comic moments, balancing this intense and provocative drama.
